It’s that time of the year that Pedro del Mar after months of hard work releases the 21st episode of his successful compilation series Mellomania. He is responsible to go through thousands of demos and choose the appropriate new and exclusive tracks that he will include in each Mellomania CD along with the obvious trance anthems that are currently played by the biggest trance djs worldwide.
He divides the tracks in two great mixes. The one is called The Club Session with the uplifting hands in the air anthems and the second one is The Beach Session with the more progressive summery Balearic selections perfect to relax and calm your spirit and imagine that you dance along with it in a beach bar in Ibiza. When compilations carry on for so many years’ means that they manage to build a loyal fanbase that appreciates the hard work and the amount of time that an artist invests in order to release a compilation that later will be considered as classic.

The release of Mellomania 21 CD compilation is the perfect reason to ask Pedro del Mar to do an interview with me in order to explain to us the whole process of putting a such successful compilation together and maybe to understand why this compilation is so popular and one that international audiences wait with anticipation.
Interview is written and conducted by Dimitri Kechagias, Radio/Club dj & Music Journalist
Dimitri: First of all many thanks for accepting my request once again to do this interview. You just released the 21st volume of your successful compilation series Mellomania via Black Hole recordings. This compilation is directly linked to your successful radio shows that are syndicated in many fm and internet based radio stations worldwide. Is it possible to tell us if you remember the first ever Mellomania radio shows that you produce and how you felt when was on air? Was this radio show a success from the very early on or it took some time building the loyal fan base?
Pedro del Mar: You’re warmly welcome. Always a great pleasure to talk with you!
Yeah I totally remember the first Mellomania show on November 1st 2001 on Radio Sunshine Live. But let’s go a bit more back to explain how it came to this own radio show concept. I’ve been appearing regularly on Germany’s biggest and most successful Dance station Sunshine Live over a couple of years by being guest DJ in this or that show. After another guest appearance in the show “Welcome To The Club” in spring 2001 I’ve been meeting by chance the program director on Ibiza and he asked me “hey haven’t you been a few weeks back live in the show? I liked the music and the way you’re acting on the microphone. Won’t you be interested becoming part of the radio station?”. So he invited me to a casting and a kind of moderation training (being the only guy within a pride of girls with the result of doing a daily show probably won’t be the right concept for myself. So we’ve been discussing possibilities and Roger Shah and me developed the Mellomania radio show concept. The great thing was that from the very first show Roger and me had 100% musical freedom. So we took the chance of presenting the international HQ trance sound to the German audience who was used to listen to commercial dance music at that time. In fact it was a kind of trial to find out if the audience will take on the concept and it seems as if they did and by November 1st 2001 we’ve been live on air.

We do still thank the station that they gave us a prime time schedule for it reaching a big amount of people from the first episode and we’ve all been surprised that the show quickly became one of the key shows of the station. Over the years the show has been modified to todays concept.
Dimitri: When did you take the decision to turn this radio show into a compilation? How did you felt when you hold in your hands the 1st ever Mellomania CD and how it was to go in a record shop and see it on their shelves amongst other famous EDM compilation series?
Pedro del Mar: We originally didn’t have the intention to release a CD series next to the show, especially as CD sales have been massively dropping in Germany at that time so it was a big risk to fail. But in 2003 we finally decided to give it a try and compared to other 100% Trance compilations we reached a solid amount of sales. I remember the day, listening to the radio spot with the Mellomania 01 advertisement and my way to a local shop buying myself a copy of it. I surely received a few free copies but I wanted to go into the shop buying a copy of my first own CD series with Roger. It was definitely one of those moments I won’t forget! And I became really proud when we got own Mellomania shelves in the major stores after having released Mellomania 05!
Dimitri: You started this CD with main target the German audience but now with your co-operation with Black Hole recordings your CD will travel all over the world. Is still trance scene in Germany big enough to sustain a trance compilation like Mellomania or the internationalization of the compilation was a much needed move in order to find a bigger audience? In international level you have to compete against many other well known and very famous compilations too.
Pedro del Mar: The scene in Germany has become very small these days. Back in the 90s Germany has probably been one of the world’s Top 3 markets for Trance or electronic music in Germany but with commercialization around the millennium the whole market collapsed. Our radio show concept originally started for the German market but we quickly realized that we’re having more and more listeners from outside of Germany, that’s why started with the Mellomania radio expansion by 2002 and gained a bigger and bigger international radio audience. Over the years we received a lot of interest from international labels to release as well the CD series in their territories but it wasn’t easy to realize. One the one hand have been different business interests between our German partner for the CD series but the main problem has always been the legal part of the business. Most big artists do have different labels for different territories so it simply hasn’t been possible to realize an international edition of the album without losing some quality. And quality has always been on top of our list instead of selling more copies by releasing as well internationally.
But when we came closer and closer to the 20th jubilee of the CD album and as Mellomania became a popular brand on different continents I finally made the decision to speak to Black Hole about the future of this series and about my plans to expand. No doubt that the German sales have also been dropping by the time (but still not at all in a way as the German market dropped in general), but this wasn’t my key intention. Over the years I received so many messages by customers from all parts of the world that it is simply too expensive for them to order the series due to the high shipping costs and I simply wanted to fix this. And after a great meeting with Black Hole we decided to realize the world-wide release together and this is where we are today and I have to say that it is really great to work with Black Hole, it is really like being part of a great family!
I don’t feel that I have to compete with other big CD series like A State Of Trance or In Search Of Sunrise. If you ask me it is really great that there are a couple of first class international CD concepts out there but I don’t regard it as competition. I don’t wanna be better like this or that album nor do I feel any pressure to sell more copies than other compilations. As for me personally it is cool being with my series part of the international CD compilation family!
Dimitri: How long it took you and how many demos did you checked out in order to decide which tracks you needed to include in this compilation?
Pedro del Mar: It always takes me a few months working on a new compilation. I’ve easily listened to 10.000+ tracks and mixes over that time. I usually focus on the most recent and upcoming tracks but once I’m totally in love with a track I also wanna have it included even though it may have already been released a couple of weeks or even months ago. I just wanna have all my personal favorite tracks included. No doubt that people may have a different taste or don’t understand why this or that track is not included, but as you can imagine it is not possible to include all great tracks on 2CDs. Aside of external licensing I’m always speaking to some producers to produce exclusively in this or that style for the compilation and this part is always the part that takes most of the time!
Dimitri: Are you taking care of the licensing of the tracks on your own or Black Hole is doing it for you? Is it expensive as project to produce this compilation?
Pedro del Mar: I’m doing the track selection completely on my own and then pass on the list to Black Hole who are taking care of the legal licensing then.
Dimitri: Is there a case that you wanted a lot a track in this compilation but you didn’t manage to get it because of licensing restrictions or other issues?
Pedro del Mar: No doubt that it is impossible to get some artists for an international CD release because of the legal situation of this artist. E.g. Armin Van Buuren is having a different label partner in all key territories so you need to get permission by every label partner in every country to use the track and to deal out the conditions. So there are always some tracks that cannot be cleared for this reason. But we’re usually getting around 95% of the tracks we wanna get for the CD.
Dimitri: Did you mixed it with CD’s as live Dj set or you mixed it with the aid of new technologies and computer software?
Pedro del Mar: I’m usually always mixing live and then re-editing it in the studio. As you know there are always a lot of tracks on each CD, aside of megamixes it is probably the series with the most tracks on it. Some may dislike this because it means that the length of each track is around 4mins only, but it is the concept I personally prefer. But it also means that I have to re-edit all of the used tracks. At the end there is usually not one track in its original arrangement but every track has been modified or re-edited by myself and this part of the CD needs to be done in the studio using some additional technology.
Dimitri: You divide the two cds in two very distinctive parts. The one is called Club Session and the other Beach Session. Why you separate the tracks in these two categories and can you tell us the main differences between the two sessions?
Pedro del Mar: I continued this concept from the time when I did the CD with Roger Shah. I’ve always been mixing CD1 and Roger CD2 with the result that my CD has always been a bit trancier whilst Roger went into a Balearic direction. I just kept the old concept having the first Disc 100% filled with emotional, euphoric and uplifting trance and on Disc 2 showcasing my deeper face. It may be influenced by Progressive House, Balearic or Progressive Trance but as I’m not a big fan of being limited within a certain style I keep it open. But CD 2 is always slower and relaxier than Disc 1.
Dimitri: Can you please choose your Top 5 tracks(trance hits/anthems) which are already released and included in this CD plus your short comment about them? What they mean to you and why you liked them so much and you thought that must be included in the Mellomania CD?
Pedro del Mar: My Top 5 are:
1. Roger Shah feat. Adrina Thorpe – Island: my personal favorite vocal tune of the year taken from my personal favorite album of the year “Roger Shah - Openminded!?”
2. Cosmic Gate & Emma Hewitt – Be Your Sound: huge progressive vocal anthem take from Cosmic Gate’s huge artist album “Wake Your Mind”
3. Alex Morph feat. Sylvia Tosun – An Angels Love: even though it is a 2.0 version of a previous Alex Morph release, I’m totally in love with it!
4. Illitheas feat. Tiff Lacey – Little Heart: Bernie Gums aka illitheas is one of the biggest talents in the global EDM scene and this track another jewel!
5. Simon J feat. Simon Binkenborn – Way Back Home: originally released on another label I’ve signed it exclusively as I’m playing it for months during all my gigs!

Dimitri: Within this compilation and lately released as a single is your remix of the classic York track – Reachers of Civilization. Can you please tell us if it was a difficult task to remix such a seminal classic and if it is possible to give us your comment on Torsten Stenzel overall contribution in the EDM scene.
Pedro del Mar: In fact it was Black Hole who asked me if I could imagine remixing this all-time classic. First of all I was thinking if it is a good idea as you can easily fail in remixing a classic, especially when it was such a successful track. But as it is one of my Top10 classics of all-time I couldn’t say no and I’ve been pleased to remix it officially. The problem we had was that there haven’t been any more original parts of it, especially the original guitars that have been the heart of the original mixes have been lost.
That’s why I asked Jörg Stenzel, Torsten’s brother who has always been responsible for the guitar riffs if he can record them again and he luckily did it. But next to the huge guitar line I wanted to give it a different treatment instead of just a 2.0 version and so I played an own piano line as key part next to the guitar riffs.
Torsten himself is probably the most underrated persona by audience. He has been responsible for tons of chart entries and the success of many other artists. But he always decided to stay a bit more in the background. And whilst many artists who are that successful are flying to the moon, he always stayed the same relaxed and nice guy. But I’m really happy that he is doing a full comeback in 2012 and I’m sure he will produce and release a lot of mind-blowing tracks in 2012 and the next years!
Dimitri: Please give us a short comment about all the tracks that you signed exclusively for this compilation and they are released for first time in it?
Pedro del Mar:
1. illitheas feat. Tiff Lacey – Little Heart: going to be released in February on “Shah-Records”. Actually preparing the final mix package for it.

3. Sergey Shabanov & Artem Sonin – Easy Day: to be released around March on “Shah-Music Digital”. Nice Uplifter by this Russian duo
4. Jose Amnesia feat. Anthya – Don’t Breathe: to be released around March on “Shah-Music Digital”. I’ve always been a fan of Jose’s work, so it is a great pleasure to welcome him within the Shah-Music family.
5. Simon J feat. Simon B – Way Back Home: after having received the promo from another label I simply had to sign it to Shah-Music. Scheduled for February on “Shah-Music Digital”
6. Moorea Blur – My Life: I played a common gig with them in Poland where they showed me some new own demos. This is just one of a few to come on “Shah-Music Digital”

8. Matt Bukovski pres. Ive5 – Unanswered Questions: Matt is one of my personal favorite producers of the moment and a great pleasure to welcome him on ““Shah-Music Digital”.
9. Pedro Del Mar feat. Fancy Vienna – Windows To My Soul: behind the Fancy Vienna project is Christopher Chantzis and it was very nice to work on this tune with him and his team. This one is not expected to become a single release for now but will be part of my artist album later this year!
10. Pakka feat. Simon – The Light: as I’m a fan of Simon Binkenborn’s voice it wasn’t a question to sign this track to “Shah-Music Digital”.

Dimitri: Are you going to support the release of the CD with a worldwide club tour?
Pedro del Mar: I’m going to play again some selected gigs to promote the album, but this time we don’t do a 6 months world tour as we did last year for Mellomania 20!
Dimitri: Number 1 of 2011 at the ASOT influential radio show is Aly & Fyla – We Control the Sunlight. Do you believe that this signals a big return of the big uplifting 140 BPM vocal trance tracks instead of the electro trance and progressive ones or is because this particular track is really good so it’s not a trend?
Pedro del Mar: No! You have to divide this topic into two different ones: Uplifting trance has never died and won’t die that early. There are many first class producers and DJs out there holding up the trance flag. But on the other side you need to regard the sales and trance is not playing a big role anymore when it comes to sales. It is very sad but a fact. And as the big House DJs are merging housy beats with trancy melodies and dancy vocals it doesn’t make the life of trance easier. It doesn’t mean the end of this emotional music style but it will make it almost impossible to make the living out of this genre!
Dimitri: 2011 is over and I wonder if you can pick up for us your best track of 2011(personal) & (from other artist), your best remix (personal) & (from other artist), your best new label that established or became well known in 2011 and the best artist of 2011 (newcomer) & (established)
Pedro del Mar:

Remix: Roger Shah pres. Sunlounger feat. Lorilee – Life (Pedro Del Mar Remix) [Magic Island]
Other artists:
Track: Roger Shah feat. Adrina Thorpe – Island [Magic Island]
Remix: Nadia Ali, Starkillers & Alex Kenji - Pressure (Alesso Remix) [Spinnin]
Newcomer: Avicii and Alesso
Established: Roger Shah
Label: impossible to choose one I’m sorry
Dimitri: I would love to ask you if you feel satisfied with your record company Shah Music until now. Are you happy with its financial success and the recognition and respect that gets its releases in the trance scene? Are you going to modify anything in your label or maybe add new sublabels in 2012?
Pedro del Mar: I honestly can’t complain. Even though trance sales are dropping massively we’re still alive and I guess this is a good sign. We’re always working on improving strategies, sales and concepts but I’m proud of the company for sure. And yes we are launching a new label called “delmar" which will be distributed by Black Hole Recordings.
It like to keep it secret for now that we'll also be behind a progressive house label as the house DJs are like snobbish girls and may dislike if a company with a trance image is doing a progressive house label :)
Dimitri: Can you reveal to us your personal releases as Pedro del Mar that we should expect to get in the near future and to pinpoint the Shah Music releases that trance fans should look out for in 2012.
Pedro del Mar: This year will be a very productive year. I’m going to release two more Mellomania albums, one more Playa Del Lounge Chillout album and I’ll be shortly starting working on my first artist album.
Next to the featured upcoming label releases on Mellomania, there will be many more great productions by all our artists. It wouldn’t be fair to highline just a few ones. But the highlight will be the first release on my new label “delmar" which will be a tune by one of the world’s biggest artists. I just can’t speak about it at this stage as we’re actually preparing the final mix package but it is definitely a huge release that may cause some rumors by February!
All in all 2012 is going to be my busiest year so far and I’m really looking forward to it!
Last but not least I wish everybody a great 2012 full of health, peace and success. Not to forget some nice music!
