Specializing in Trance, Chill, and House with a distinctive organic flair, York began as a collaboration in the early days between Torsten and his brother Jörg Stenzel. Founded in 1997, this project became a pioneer in guitar-driven electronic music, with Torsten managing production while Jörg contributed most of the guitar parts—a significant element of their success. York's debut release, "The Awakening," achieved massive chart success in 1998. In 1999, York released "On The Beach," a cover of Chris Rea's classic, which soared into the top five of the U.K. singles chart. Concurrently, York was featured on ATB's popular trance single "The Fields Of Love."
York's early hit singles, including "Reachers of Civilisation," were compiled on their 2001 debut album "Experience," followed by a second album, "Peace," in 2004, and reissued in 2006 with the single "Mercury Rising." By 2007, Torsten relocated his family to Antigua, naturally leading York to become more of a solo venture, although the brothers continued to collaborate on select tracks.
