Cheat Codes are taking off their cowboy hats and returning to their dance music roots with the release of ‘Location’ featuring A7S on Armada Music. After dropping country-influenced album ‘One Night in Nashville’ earlier this year, chock full of collaborations with some of the genre’s biggest stars including country icon Dolly Parton, the band wiped their Instagram clean to tease that the next era of Cheat Codes is coming.
The LA-based trio is known for cross genre-experimentation and creatively pushing the envelope, working with top artists across alternative, pop and country, but as they return to dance music, they want listeners to grasp that DJing and production lies at their core. Hits including 2016’s ‘Sex’ with Kris Kross Amsterdam and ‘Let Me Hold You’ with Dante Klein, and 2017’s ‘No Promises’ featuring pop superstar Demi Lovato, which reached US, UK and Australia Top 40, cement their foundation in the genre. They explain: “dance music can transcend anywhere, at any time, no matter who the collaborating artist may be.”
Reminiscent of their earlier sound, ‘Location’ channels a modernized dance-pop direction to deliver a dance floor heater spearheaded by A7S’ dark and moody vocal. Finding inspiration in the mundane, the story of the track begins in a grocery store parking lot on an ordinary afternoon during a break between production sessions, when Cheat Codes saw an elderly woman in an old 1990s Honda Civic exit her car and lock her door. The beep of the door locking echoed across the parking lot, causing laughter among the group, and that afternoon they returned to the studio to put together the production of ‘Location’ – inclusive of the car lock beep.
