Teased by the release of three of its tracks over the past year, ‘Phases’ is the latest work of multitalented Canadian producer French Braids. Released on Armada Music via Sadboy Records, this seven-track display of genre-crossing ability boasts collaborations with acclaimed artists, producers and songwriters such as George Maple, Lizzy Land and Anjulie.
’ is a collection of songs, each with a different artist, with a different sonic palette and written during a different time in my life”, French Braids explains. “Some songs were written during the pandemic alone in a cottage, others during breakups or during fun writing trips in L.A. They all stem from different phases of my life, which led to a tapestry of emotions and sounds. That’s what inspired the title.”
The EP explores themes such as heartbreak and conditional love through honest lyrics married with matching soundscapes. Synonymous with the raw approach to the EP’s production, unlooped live instrumentation exists at the heart of each song. The EP’s headline track, ‘Dancing on the Edge’, features French Braids’ childhood piano played live in his parents’ home, giving an added personal layer to the production.
