ADE 2018: Discover Films & Documentaries about electronic music culture screened during ADE

ADE has joined forces with multiple cinema partners to present the best films and documentaries during this year's ADE.


Take a break from the ADE conference or night program and treat yourself to a movie or documentary. De Hallen Studio's, LAB111 and the Melkweg are the places to be if you want to swap the pumping electronic beats for a comfortable cinema chair. Grab your ADE Card and make your way to the big screen, we've listed five documentaries not to miss:

Silvana (with panel talk)
Silvana tells the story of Swedish hip-hop artist Silvana Imam. This film - in collaboration with IDFA - follows the first turbulent years of her career and her mythical relationship with Swedish pop-artist Beatrice Eli. The panel talk starts at 8:30 PM and will be hosted by Sophia Seawell.

Studio 54
Studio 54 tells the in-depth story of how New York's most iconic nightclub was created. Studio 54 was the epicenter of '70s hedonism - a place that not only redefined the nightclub but also came to symbolize an entire era.

Era Of Dance: The Story Of Soviet Techno Revolution 
The second half of the '80s. The West and the East became connected by a new culture phenomena - techno revolution. The man behind this historical invasion, Indulis Bilzens, stood by the birth of rave culture in Germany and successfully brought it on the other side of the Iron Curtain in the second half of the 80‘s. For decades his story was unknown.

I Dream Of Wires 
I Dream Of Wires chronicles the history, demise and resurgence of the modular synthesizer, featuring interviews with over 100 modular musicians, inventors and enthusiasts. Today, the modular synthesizer is no longer an esoteric curiosity or even a mere music instrument, it is an essential tool for radical new sounds. I Dream of Wires begins with a historical primer, exploring the development of modular synthesizers right through to the near-extinction of these instruments, brought on by the introduction of portable, digital synthesizers in the ’80s.

Torus: Live Soundtrack Stalker
Melkweg invited musician Torus to pick a movie and to create a new soundtrack. Torus chose ‘Stalker’, a film directed by Andrei Tarkovsky. The film combines elements of science fiction with philosophical and psychological themes. The screening takes place in Melkweg Cinema and during the film, Torus will take you on a trip with his new soundtrack! Torus - the ever-evolving alter-ego of The Hague-born artist and producer, Joeri Woudstra - also performs during SOPHIE at the Tolhuistuin on ADE Wednesday.

More ADE film
From October 17th to 21st, you can visit LAB111 and Melkweg for a diverse film program. On Thursday head over to Kriterion for a Q&A dedicated to the Art of the Aftermovie. The Sundance award-winning documentary MATANGI will have its first screening at the Melkweg on ADE Saturday. Make to visit the full ADE film program for all the ADE-card advantages.
