Uncomfortable Conversations: Music & Mental Health - things we need to talk about and things we can do to keep listening and making change
Uncomfortable conversations abound in the creative industries and the media sphere - from #me to #blacklivesmatter to #TimesUp - and the music industries have been called out too, from the under representation of female acts in live music to sexual harassment.

However, a cause for concern from all quarters of the industries has been the uncomfortable reality of mental health issues that appear to endemic across all sectors of the music industries. It is this area that we want to address and we acknowledge that to do so means in all these areas we are committed to asking uncomfortable questions in the hope that this may lead to new ways of living and working together that are better and more healthy for all involved.

Brighter Sound, The Hub UK and Music:Leeds presents…
Both Sides Now - Open Space
Making gender equality in the music industry a reality... what can we all do?

Both Sides Now is a large-scale initiative taking place across the North of England to support emerging female artists and up-and-coming industry professionals to transform the future of the music industry.

We want to create a growing network, deliver sustainable activity, and affect permanent change around the perception, opportunities and profiling of women in music, from the classroom, to the boardroom, to the stage.

This first ‘Open Space’ event is for anyone with an interest in this conversation to come together and discuss what could make a real difference - whether that’s about role models, motherhood, education, social mobility, policy change or something else entirely.

Unfolding over a series of informal conversations, the agenda will be yours to set. You might want to convene a conversation about something you feel passionately about, or join a conversation kick-started by someone else. More than just a talking shop, our aim is to get things and people moving.

The event is open to everyone, food and drinks will be provided and there will be activities for children.

We use an inclusive definition of ‘women’ and welcome participants who are women and non-binary, both cis and trans.

Open Space is a method of facilitation, where participants create and manage their own agenda of discussions around a central theme.
