The Bearded Man recalled an old Twilight Zone episode as he lay there on the carpeted floor of the airport lounge. He remembered how a man, having died, found himself in heaven. Every time he gambled, he won, getting richer and richer. Everyone loved him everywhere he went, and he couldn't fail at anything he tried to do. For the first time, losing wasn't an option. At first, he was thrilled. Wasn't this what he had always wanted? He'd play another round of roulette, and wouldn't you know it? 33 black once more. Another winner. After a few days, he found himself incredibly bored. Winning *all* the time was worse than losing *most* of the time. Suddenly, he began to piece it together. He'd never been the world's most virtuous man, and this surely wasn't heaven. This was one of the devil's cruel tricks - a fitting punishment for a lifelong gambler. The Bearded Man pondered the moral of this story. He was between flights, having travelled from Perth, to Sydney, to Los Angeles, to Miami without a break. He'd been awake for 36 hours and he felt like a zombie. He thought about the 7 hour trip that remained from Miami to Lima, Peru, and he felt a rush of dread come over him. "This is what it means to be a globe trotter, I guess." Recalling the story once more, he thought about all the truly wonderful people he had met on his travels so far. Would he swap the bitter of the journey for a life of only sweet? Not a chance in hell.
