This year 10,000 HOURS, ADE and De Regenboog Groep join forces
with international DJ and chef Seth Troxler to give the homeless people
in Amsterdam an unforgettable food experience on Wednesday October
14. “People shouldn’t be hungry."
We spoke to DJ Seth Troxler (US) in Ibiza about food, volunteering and the power of unity in the dance community. Seth Troxler, a world class DJ and wizard in the kitchen. He won the annual ADE DJ Cook Off three
times in a row and this year is jurying for the second time, together
with Dave Clarke and Paul Oakenfold. That same day he’ll be cooking an
extensive three-course lunch for 75 homeless people in one of the
walk-in shelters of De Regenboog Groep.
As Seth puts it: “People shouldn’t be hungry.” It’s not the first time
he’ll be cooking for the homeless. “A friend of mine does a thing in
Sydney, where he feeds the homeless every Tuesday. Whenever I’m there I
help him out. I’m happy to serve people, that is always the best part.”
“The conservative kind of nature is not to help everyone, so everyone is kind of on their own.”
Whereas Seth is often seen as ‘the funny guy, who likes to do gimmicks,’ he actually has a serious side. “When your are able to look at life in a funny way, that’s comedic to other people, they think you just need to be crazy. However, there is a lot more going on at the end of day.” That he isn’t only fun and games shows, when we talk to him about the growing gap between the rich and the poor. “In my opinion the growing gap is a sign of conservative government. The conservative kind of nature is not to help everyone, so everyone is kind of on their own. It’s a systematic placement of creating the poor, the rich and the divide. There is more than enough space, money and food to house and feed everyone. But you have to make that change.”
“So many people are ok with us going towards this dystopian future instead of trying to strive to become a utopian society.”
The change Seth is referring to is the change that has to come from within. “When we want change in the future, we need to be the catalyst of change. Not the government, but the private people wanting to change what they want in their lives. So many people are ok with us going towards this dystopian future instead of trying to strive to become a utopian society.” According to Seth this is where the dance community can play her part. “I think people involved in dance music are generally people who are a bit more empathetic. Maybe this comes from dancing or just because of that unity feeling on the dance floor. Because on the dance floor different people and different cultures open up about their lives and open their minds about how they can be as people. So utilizing this movement as in music to also be a social movement is pretty profound.”
On October 14, Seth will lead by example as he cooks lunch for the homeless during the Amsterdam Dance Event together with 10,000 HOURS. “It’s nice to do something that’s worth a damn. Everywhere I go in the world the cornerstone of every culture is sitting down and having a meal. So to feed people is essentially the one thing that makes us all exactly human. Whatever DJ’s and clubs, when you put that next to feeding the homeless, it’s in-comparable.”
