The African electronic scene is growing rapidly and producing highly original talents. Shaun Duvet takes us to Cape Town, the beating heart of African electronica.
ADE celebrates its 20th anniversary this year and one way the event will be celebrating that is with be a number of themed concepts at ADE Pro, including a MyCity series in a 20 X 20 sessions shape: 20 minute talks by key influencers about their base of operation. In this article we take a look at Cape Town through the eyes of Shaun Duvet, managing director of Ultra South Africa.
The African electronic scene is growing rapidly and producing highly original talents whose take on house and techno is flavoured with local sensibilities. And the beautiful and dramatic city of Cape Town lies at the heart of the continent’s musical revolution. Duvet: “Cape Town for me is the most incredible city in the world because of its flawless beauty and open mindedness to creative talents,” says Duvet. “It is truly is a breeding ground for young, up and coming talent in all walks of life, from music, to art, fashion and beyond. Collectively this is what makes Cape Town the heart of the Motherland, which is Africa.”
“Some of the great acts that inspire me from Cape Town include Goldfish, GoodLuck, Sibot, Ivan Turanjanin, The Strange Lovers, Headroom, PH Fat, but of course, there are many more emerging talents too. There are tons of great outdoor parties happening over the summer that take place in incredible locations like private beaches, wineries, castles, town halls and on glorious country estates. These include Ultra South Africa, CTEMF, Love & Light, Goldfish Submerged Sundays, and We Love Summer."
There is more to life than outdoor. "The clubs in Cape Town breed amazing talent by combining the best in techno, house, hip hop, soul, rock, and everything in between. Some of my favourite places are Coco, Era, Aces & Spades, Asoka & The Assembly," says Duvet.
