ALBUM REVIEW: Trilucid - Pathos, Ethos out on Infrasonic recordings

From one of the most refreshing, awe inspiring and forward thinking acts today comes their debut artist album. Infrasonic heavyweights and progressive champions Trilucid have delivered countless and unforgettable releases on the stable over the last few years. And finally, the culmination of a lot of hard work and determination sees them delivering their debut artist album ‘Pathos, Ethos’.

Trance fans will unite and be able to breathe a sigh of relief after we’ve been teasing you with snippets from the album, leaving you wanting more. True to form, the guys behind the Trilucid persona come up trumps with their 12 track long player, and the global trance family will not be disappointed with their efforts.

We begin with the plucky vibes of ‘Last But Not Least’ which is a delicate and fitting intro into the album. The journey throughout the mix is faultless and will for sure enhance all your senses, courtesy of cuts such as ‘No Matter’, ‘Alchemy’ and ‘Last Train’. That of course is just the tip of the ice berg!

Taking you higher and pushing the boundaries of sound even further, we continue into ‘Pathos, Ethos’ and next up is the sublime ‘Roof Tops’ which caused quite a stir when we teased this to fans earlier in 2014. There are cuts like ‘Gothenburg’ and the lush vocal number ‘Find You’ featuring talented vocalist Sophie Tusnelda that will really hit that spot and make the hairs stand up on the back of your neck.

An essential must have for any electronic music fan right here. Whether you’re a signed up Trilucid member or have yet to discover and embrace their unique and much loved sound, there is something for everyone here.

Trilucid bio: Trilucid is a collaboration between two incredibly passionate and unbelievably talented individuals, Andy MacDougall and Hilton Caswell. Andy has graced legendary labels including Bonzai, Monster and Green Martian under various guises, (including Andy Tau and Citizen 42) with a plethora of production and writing credits to his name, Hilton Caswell is an in demand DJ and a perfectionist producer with releases on Global Underground, Zulu Records and SIPREC and with sound production tutelage from his mentor, Mike Koglin, Hilton brings a wealth of experience to this duo. Formerly one of Andy MacDougall’s solo projects, Trilucid became a joint venture in 2013, following four years of the duo sharing studio space together. A shared love of soaring riffs and driving grooves established common musical ground, with Pryda, Markus Schultz and Mat Zo namechecked as their key contemporary influences.

Together they create trance that takes you back to the golden age of the genre - choosing potent melody and all-encompassing emotion in each individual track released. Taking some of the groove and tension of progressive house, their tracks strike the perfect balance between considered cool and spine-tingling intensity, appealing to fans far and wide. It’s an equal partnership creatively, Hilton with the Logic know how and Andy as the master of Cubase.” With Armin Van Buuren, Gareth Emery and Marcus Schultz all showing their support for Trilucid records on multiple occasions, it’s no wonder that these two are in high demand. Two releases on Ferry Corsten’s Flashover Imprint, have been followed by tracks on Saturate, In Sessions and Flux. With a full album, PATHOS/ETHOS, due on Infrasonic, they are set to make their biggest mark on the scene yet.

Dimitri Kechagias review: Infrasonic recordings is in the privileged position to present the  first album by Trilucid aka Andy MacDougall and Hilton Caswell entitled Pathos, Ethos. It includes 12 stunning tracks that will inspire the followers of high class trance to adore trance with Pathos aka passionately and in a way will bring back the Ethos of the early trance tracks that all of them were about the hypnotic spiritual feel and the strength of the melodic theme rather than the more mainstream approach that many trance producers adopt nowadays with their mind on the beatport Top 100 chart.  First is Last But Not Least that is dark moody progressive trancer with acid overtones and memorable melodic electronic blissful themes. It sounds spacey and hypnotic as well.  It's Not is a warm tribal progressive trance affair with tribal grooves, deep bubbly basslines, ethnic vocal samples and colourful Ibiza style themes along with some darker synths that appear here and there. No Matter continues on the same progressive trance pathway with laidback relaxing grooves and very strong memorable synths that will elevate your mind and body to a higher dimension.  Alchemy adopts housey grooves, deep haunting basslines and in the breakdown reveals the sun kissed melodic themes that carry the listener away like warm summer breeze. Press Play is a much more upfront sounding trancer with very peculiar unique groove and energising driving bassline, chord progressions and magical female vocals. The breakdown will surprise you with its old school electro sequence while the climax goes for an euphoric Ibiza influenced crescendo moment that will stay in your heart like the summer sun. Channels is a wonderful thoughtful dreamy progressive trancer with bubbly basslines, chunky grooves and very esoteric melodies. Its the kind of trancer that make you thing deep and make decisions in your life too.  Last Train is an excellent intense deep progressive trancer with great energy and drive. It makes you feel like riding  the Last Train back home and you anticipate to meet at the station your loved ones. On the other hand Roof Tops is great hybrid between progressive house and trance with laidback relaxing atmosphere soaked with hair raising optimistic feel good melodies. Some may even call it balearic trance and they are not far away from the truth. Take A Breath offers to the listener another moment of calmness with liquid grooves, hypnotic blissful melodies, airy pads and housey grooves. Gothenburg is a fantastic proglifting moment in the album with chopped female vocal samples, euphoric synthy hooks in the breakdown and upfront positive energetic climax that is floating and dreamy. Return is playful progressive house meets trance hybrid with strong piano theme and Ibiza style main section with old school organ riffs and positivity all over the place with irresistible rhythm that will carry you away to exotic places for a while.  Last but not least Trilucid meet Sophie Tusnelda from Denmark for the only vocal trance track of the album called Find You. Magnificent vocal performance by Sophie who shines with her stunning voice and great inspirational lyrics as well. The track is travelling, very moving and will become quickly favourite for any vocal trance aficionado. Overall the album stands out because of its originality, coherent and meaningful story that narrates to the eclectic listener, purity and honesty as the producers rather than overdoing the tracks decide to go back to the basics and with simple elements to build a memorable and highly sophisticated delicate journey through sounds. Their only one vocal track is breathtaking so I believe that there was some space for more vocal tracks but I guess Trilucid prefer to let the music and notes tell the stories rather than words! 11 Poems without words and one with lyrical words! #PureDiamond Love it
