FEATURE: Tomorrowland 2012, The festival that changed the EDM world forever

The 8th chapter in the great Tomorrowland fairy tale book was revealed at the Recreational Park De Schorre in Belgium (Boom) over three days (27th to 29th of July) of unstoppable fun and madness, which will stay in the mind of visitors for many years to come. Tomorrowland is a lifetime experience, and with its eighth most stunning edition, proved that its cultural importance is equivalent to Woodstock. It places Belgium, a country that loves music festivals, at the heart of the global EDM scene, and sets the standards for the rest of the festivals to follow.

Tomorrowland revealed a mythical dream world of fairies, goblins, elves, dwarves, mermaids, gnomes, and so many more beautiful creatures living in a place far away from our world, called the World of Wisdom. Those fairy tale keepers create and modify legendary stories. They collect the most wonderful stories ever told around the globe. The visitors to Tomorrowland followed this extraordinary path full of surprises and adventures, and discovered a kingdom of endless bookshelves and thousands of fairy tales, narrated through the most influential medium and art form that is Electronic Dance Music and its various rich genres and subgenres. The DJ’s, like the old shamans of the ancient tribes, created a perfect mental state to open the hearts and minds of the crowd, to inspire, energise, and unite people from different cultures, races, sexual preferences, under the same beat. The undeniable power of the beats, melodies, harmonies and great songs was manifested once again at Tomorrowland.

The people of Tomorrowland stand united above man made divisions, telling the world and spreading the word of equality, tolerance and togetherness.  180,000 visitors over three magical days respected each other, met new friends from all over the globe, found their loved one, who maybe lives on the other side of the Atlantic. They fully understand that music and dance is the only bond that brings together the nations, allowing them to experience unbelievable pleasures and thrilling sensations. Over three days the people of Tomorrowland expressed their love for their favourite music, and they enjoyed this common experience with friends from all over the world who share the same passion and common passion for music.

Belgium is not only right at the heart of Europe because of its geographical location, but also right at the heart of the global EDM culture. Tomorrowland changed the way we view, understand, experience and live Electronic Dance Music for ever.

Tomorrowland's modern fairy tale continues in a most successful and thrilling way, and was selected as the ‘Best Global Dance Event’, according to the prestigious IDMA awards which were announced during the Miami Winter Music Conference. Tomorrowland – now in its 8th edition – has become the world’s most attractive, critically acclaimed, and internationally sought-after electronic music festival.

This year, with 16 stages every day, most of the world’s most famous and influential DJ’s performed in front of the best crowds who were up for it, and ready to party.

Artists like David Guetta, Carl Cox, Avicii, Skrillex, Fatboy Slim, Calvin Harris, Martin Solveig, John Digweed, Paul van Dyk, Above & Beyond, Ferry Corsten, Gareth Emery, Yves V and Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike were present performing at their best because they knew that the eyes of the world were upon them. What is more important is that Tomorrowland did something revolutionary in Europe; for 7 hours each day it had its own Web TV Channel: ‘Tomorrowland TV’, broadcasting Live through YouTube to the whole world. Millions of visitors had the chance to at least get a glimpse of the Tomorrowland experience which was a spectacle above and beyond your wildest imagination. It’s not hard to guess that after Tomorrowland TV, and the positive word of mouth circulating in the real and social media worlds, next years edition will sold out in seconds. So get organised now and be ready to book your tickets and avoid disappointment.

We were pleased to be accepted as press representatives at Tomorrowland for the third year running. We have seen and experienced this festival growing and getting better and raising our expectations each year. Tomorrowland is not just a strictly music festival - its a totally unique, balanced and artistic concept, set in an area of unrivalled, spectacular natural beauty. ID&T Belgium respects the De Schorre recreational park and managed highlight its strengths and integrate this fantastic natural beauty within its Fairytale concept. They pay detailed attention to decoration, with a gigantic main stage with thousands of Fairytale books waiting to tell their own stories. Right at the centre was the Book of Wisdom which opens during the event, narrates the stories, and introduces the DJ’s who were performing on the ID&T main stage. The lighting effects enhanced the experience even more, with state of the art lasers and lights normally found find at global pop concerts. At music festivals, what is really important is the quality of the sound, particularly for EDM music, which should be loud, crisp and clear in order for the human ear to be clearly articulate all the sound elements. The sound quality was the finest you can imagine and with the volume at the right level to reduce sound pollution between the various stages. Despite moving between sixteen stages with different music styles, you felt that each music style was allocated its own space, and respected that without feeling confused, or having difficulty in distinguishing the music genres.

Special mention should be about the stunning firework, flame and pyrotechnic displays, which were synchronised with the music, Tomorrowland fireworks offered a spectacle that is beyond your expectation for an event of this type, again raising the standards of what to expect at a music festival.

With 60,000 party-goers each day, we were amazed at how well behaved everybody was, much of this as a result of the unobtrusive and professional security at the event. In addition a fully equipped First Aid post was present to offer immediately help, support and relief to anyone needing it. Behind and in front of the scenes 3,000 workers tried their best to ensure that the event was run smoothly and the visitors had their best experience ever. Belgians are well known for their friendly and relaxed attitude towards foreigners and their hospitality is documented in books and travel guides too.

We should also mention the camping village offered in at the festival in the form of ‘Dreamville’. 35,000 campers enjoyed the cleanest, secure and most comfortable environment which even access to  their very own bakery, preparing over 6,000 fresh loaves of bread each morning, ready to serve by 8AM in time for breakfast! No festival has ever gone to such extraordinary lengths – and that’s just the tip of the iceberg! Amongst these campers were 20 who slept for the first time in Dreamville Mansions – 2 custom-built houses sleeping 10 people each, designed specifically to make their experience as luxurious as possible.

1mix Radio & Flux BPM Online covered this fantastic event extensively as we were present from the very start of each day until its end. The organisers provided a fully equipped Press Office to allow us to compile our daily reports. With journalists from USA, UK, Germany, Greece, India, Brazil and many other countries, it’s obvious that the global interest in the festival is growing, and the extensive global coverage ensure its global domination.  The press office was equipped with everything a reporter would need, including daily Tomorrowland Newspaper, large projector, Wi Fi access, refreshments and friendly assistance from the Press Officer; Debby Wilmsen and Frederick. Located next to the artist rest area it was the ideal location to connect with the artists, organise interviews, and discuss with other fellow journalists their perceptions of the event, and the way they report it in their media.

Within the video report that you can watch here we offer you just a small flavour of the festival, and we cover some of the most successful and action packed stages that were the highlight for us. Interviews with festival visitors are included to get an insight of how the people of Tomorrowland experienced its unique and perfect atmosphere.

We were pleased to catch up with the official authoritative voice of Tomorrowland and ID&T Belgium again this year Debby Wilmsen. Once again she was the welcome helping hand for any journalist covering the event, along with Frederic De Gezelle. Within this very informative interview, Debby give us the official perspective on the event, and tells us all the details about the phenomenal success of this years event, and the number of visitors that watched the event online through the official YouTube channel. She explains the three most vital elements that underpin the success of the event, and she highlights the fact that the festival cultivates really good relations with the neighbours, who feel part of it. It’s definitely very interesting to watch.

Last but not least; we were interested to find out how the media in Belgium covered the event. We requested an interview with Belgium journalist, Kevin Major, who was reporting at the National Radio Station and is a specialist who covers Cultural issues. He is also an active DJ and editor in chief of the well known web site www.cuttingedge.be. His views of the festival will make the picture more detailed for anyone who wants to learn more, so it’s highly recommended you watch it..
