Back in June 2010 one of the world’s most inventive electronic music minds released the artist album odyssey that was ‘Do You Dream?’ Fan applause, cross-genre DJ support and dance press acclaim greeted one chart-scaling, master-blasting single after another.
From ‘Do You Dream’s day of release though, Markus Schulz had already begun imagining and conceiving the sound designs that would go to make up his next long-playing excursion.
“When you’re in the studio, deep in production mode on an album, your mind’s eye is forever picturing the reactions tracks, and moments in tracks, are going to generate”, says Markus. So in many respects the title ‘Scream’ is also the album’s mission statement. It’s that response, that surge of feeling and emotion I want to come back up off the floor when one of its tracks goes on. When it happens, you know all the late hours in the studio, putting the pieces in place, have been worth it!”
With a single-minded quality-meets-quantity credo, Markus has made judicious use of known vocal talent and new singer/songwriter blood on the album. These include US-based sensations Jaren and Aruna, as well as Paper Aeroplanes front-woman Sarah Howells. Also front-and-centre are precocious newer talents, with the likes of Seri and new Schulz discovery-cum-protégée, Adina Butar joining ‘Scream’s vocal cast.
Giving the album a strong song-edged bias has resulted in one with productions that span EDM’s spectrum.

Giving the album a strong song-edged bias has resulted in one with productions that span EDM’s spectrum.
For every daytime radio inciting number (‘Until It’s Gone’ ‘Love Rain Down On Me’ and current single ‘Caught’ to tag but a few), there’s also the more underground themes of tracks like ‘Deep In The Night’, &lsq uo;Absolution’ and the album’s thrilling title track. During the final weeks of ‘Scream’s production Schulz commented: “one of the side-effects of producing instrumental long-players like my Dakota ‘Thoughts Become Things’ series is that you keenly feel how much you miss working with lyrics and vocals. ‘Scream’ will be my most vocal-oriented album yet and I believe that the singer-song-writing talent I’ve collaborated with, it will also make for my most accomplished”.
‘Scream’ isn’t exclusively about the vocal though. Building the consummate 360° electronic music album requires contrast and that comes firmly into focus with its heart-of-the-dancefloor seeking instrumentals. From the scene-setting beat-free overture of ‘Our Moment’ to the serrated synthery of floor-ammo like ‘Triotronic’, ‘Soul Seeking’ and ‘Loops n Things’ ( with Ferry Corsten) it delivers a comprehensive, panoramic, day-or-night-time listening experience. Through it Schulz has once again demonstrated that the production side of his mind is alive, kicking and quite literally screaming to be turned loose. And on August 31st that’s exactly what will happen. Planet EDM will never be quite the same again.
Dimitri Kechagias review: Markus Schulz is not only one of the most influential djs and producers in the trance scene at the moment but also a true artist and he proves it big time with his brand new album with the excellent title "Scream". His album is definitely gonna become a classic once again carefully constructed and composed along with some of the biggest talents in the EDM world at the moment. Now the BEST GLOBAL DANCE LABEL delivers the Extended versions for fellow djs to add in their sets as well. First of all is the title track of the album called Scream feat feat. Ken Spector. Its an excellent deep progressive trancer with beautiful male vocals by Ken who has really gothic sound in his mysterious voice. Very strong melody and powerful beats make this the excellent track to take the album its name. Our Moment is a great ambient intro track perfect to play as the starting track in your set and build your story from there. One of the excellent collaborations is of course with Ana Diaz for the massive Nothing Without Me. Powerful storming beats, epic big room synths and Ana with that indie dance style voice that adds an extra sparkle in it. On Carry On he works with Jaren who all we love dearly for her voice and lyrics. The result of this collaboration is an energetic progressive trance anthem with great effect on the vocal that she sounds like singing it with many others. Its definitely a deep and highly infectious cut. The cool Fiora takes part on Deep In The Night and she adds voice upon the pumping beats that Markus Schulz knows so well to deliver to his audience. It gives you a sense of driving in the night and from somewhere in the sky Fiora's voice shinning with her piano as a great star that guides your way to your favourite club that Markus will smash it with his great dj set. Anthemic and emotional ready for peak time use. The two big stars of the Coldharbour family Elevation & KhoMha work together for Triotonic that seems to be one of the tracks that get great attention on the album. The club djs who don't like vocals will adopt this dark tech trancer straight away. Unforgettable synthy lead in the breakdown and amazing build up ready to give extra strength to your parties. On Soul Seeking Markus is working on his own and he delivers a fantastic club anthem that is trance at its best with strength, dynamism and the lovely melody in the breakdown. Its one of those tracks that have that Dakota style in it. Next Markus Schulz collaborates with Aruna for Sing Me Back To Life. As you can expect from Aruna she delivers the finest lyrics and her performance is heartbreaking to say the least. Of course when this is combined with Markus solid production the result can only be magnificent. Markus Schulz on Don't Leave Before The Sunrise goes again for a solo excursion and he delivers a sensitive blissful progressive balearic hopeful anthem that asks the listener to stay at the club until the last notes. The excellent vocal anthems continue with Until It's Gone featuring the dynamic vocal performance by Trevor Guthrie. Epic progressive trancer with very strong melancholic melodic theme and the great indie rock style vocals to add to the track character and that stadium size big room trance appeal . On Universe Is Mine, Markus works for second track in the album with Adina Butar who seems to be able to capture with her deep, sensual and very emotional voice the essence of the lyrics. Great composition with some old school trance references in it. One of the finest voices in EDM guests on the album too. The lovely and absolutely stunning Sarah Howells sings on Tempted that is a powerful melodic epic progressive trancer with hints of epic progressive house as well. Excellent lyrics for the big crowds to sing a long and definitely one of the tracks that deserve to get release as single. The vocal trance beauties continue on Absolution feat. Mark Frisch. Hi-nrg synthy melodies, pumping rocking beats, driving smashing basslines and Mark touching and very emotional performance makes Absolution one of the tracks that the crowd will fell in love instantly. Khaz & E.L.I. perform the vocals on I Like It. Big room synths are combined with rocking beats and manic basslines and on top the excellent mysterious dark gothic style vocals will make us all scream too: WE Like IT! For the friends of underground progressive trance sound Markus collaborates with Elevation for the very large Finish Line. Its a massive club banger that reveals in its breakdown the epic hands in the air rave style distorted synthy riff that will raise the roof for sure. Peak time cracker that will make you sweat and ask more of the same. If you want more banging material Markus collaborates with Arnej for the outstanding Carbon. You can expect a really powerful, extremely energetic and unstoppable driving 8 minutes anthem with ultra strong melodic theme that can blow your mind miles away. Mr. Pit is the next guest artist in the album for the club shaking Push The Button. Big room club trancer with pumping rubbling beats, sidechain effects and electro kissed synthy riff that will move even mountains. Scream is definitely one of the finest EDM artist albums for 2012. It is so diverse, varied and openminded to influences and new trends. Markus collaborates with his favourite artists from his label and gives voice to new singers that have the chance to introduce themselves to a wider public. He combines in the right doses inspirational vocal trance tracks and straight forward peak time club trance anthems. The excellent extended versions will be adopted asap in dj sets worldwide. Quality always wins. Love IT!
