‘20’ celebrates two decades of music from the Godfather of Finland’s always-flourishing trance scene. Orkidea’s new long-player takes a transfixing, episodic look at his personal sound experiences throughout the last 20 years of trance. Enter the world of ‘retro-futurism'. Enter the world of Orkidea.
Possibly the greatest unsung hero in the genre ever, over his 20-year trance mission, Orkidea (DJ and master-producer Tapio Hakenen) has always been the man that’s let the music do the talking. In spearheading the rise of Finland as a force on the global trance stage, he paved the way for acts like Super8 & Tab, Darude, Alex Kunnari, Joonas Hahmo and numerous others to break into the scene. Notably, on his TATW radio show, Paavo Siljamaki of Above & Beyond cited Orkidea as one of the reasons he started making trance music.
‘20’ delivers what Orkidea terms a “retro-futuristic” vision of trance music. Having played in the genre since its earliest dawn, it’s an area he’s as well versed in as any. The album re-examines themes and sounds spanning two decades, recalibrating them to 2011 levels and with the most up-to-date studio tech currently available. It shines a light into lesser-known corners of trance - there’s nothing that can be considered obvious or overt on ‘20’. Where he references or revisits the classics, they are of the double-deep underground variety - the tracks that Tapio considers to be the true anthems.
Dimitri Kechagias review: Dj Orkidea is definitely one of the most influential trance djs and producers that his track Unity, by the way is included with a brand new version in this album, is considered as evergreen trance classic. Now is the time for the superb album to come out and bring waves of euphoria for all the faithful followers of quality trance music. In my hands I have 4 of the massive tracks included in that album that is shaped to become one of the highlights of 2011. First of all the title track of the album Tw3nty. Dynamic progressive trancer with powerful bassline and immense drive that lead us on a very short breakdown that introduce us the main melodic theme and then we land on the main gigantic breakdown that a very large and really effective ravey kind of riff is waiting to bring the ultimate euphoria on the trancefloor. Next the classic by Der Dritte Raum - Hale Bopp is recreated by dj Orkidea and JS16. Its simply mindblowing update on that really influential classic. Electro prog trance style version that stays faithful on the basics of the original track perfect for the modern dancefloors. Lowland & Orkidea's co-operation Blackbird has already the support of Armin van Buuren in his radio show ASOT. Its dark progressive trancer with vocal samples, electro fat prog trance basslines and psy trance influences. The result is really hypnotic and absolutely stunning. It sounds to be my favorite of the 4 included in this sampler. Last but not least Hot Trigger is the faster included on 138 bpm is big room uplifting trancer that follows the psy trance tradition but with club trance sensibilities. Small taste of a wonderful album that is highly recommended.
