ADE 2015: Andreas Scholl to perform at Westerkerk

The world-famous German countertenor will give a unique, one-time-only concert in the heart of Amsterdam on Friday October 16.

During ADE the world-famous German countertenor Andreas Scholl will give a unique, one-time-only concert at the Westerkerk in the heart of Amsterdam. On Friday October 16 at 8.30 pm he will perform a new, modern setting of the Stabat Mater. The setting was composed by the VaVox collective and will be executed with the use of, among other instruments, analogue modular synthesizers. Light and video projections will make the monumental church itself also play an important role. The Stabat Mater hymn dates back to the 13th century and has been set to music by many of the great composers, such as Haydn, Jenkins, Vivaldi and Pergolesi.

Unique performance with analogue synthesizers
Through the performance Scholl and VaVox - an international collective of visual artists and musicians - will introduce one of the cornerstones of the Western classical music tradition to a new and younger audience. At the same time the concert will bring electronic music to the classical world. The VaVox Stabat Mater is a unique project and for the first time in musical history a countertenor’s voice will be combined with analogue synthesizers. Instruments that will be used include Moog, ARP, Oberheim and Mellotron.

Andreas Scholl is very enthusiastic about this new setting: ‘It’s new and also very exciting for me.
For example, how will my voice, the music, the images and the lighting come together in a space like the Westerkerk? Of course I know the piece and I’m well prepared, but the reason for everyone to be present is that on that night it’s really something new that will be presented. Something that doesn’t fit inside existing categories. So if you’re open to something new, you’re definitely in for an exciting night!’

The Stabat Mater is important to Scholl: ‘Over the last 25 years I’ve sung different versions of the Stabat Mater. It’s a recurring theme in my life. It’s an exceptional piece of poetry and the repetitions make it have a hypnotic and meditative effect. I’m really looking forward to this concert.’
