ADE 2014: Discover Electronic Dance Music Cultute in Films at ADE Playground

Thomas Hosman, director of Dutch cinefile community Cineville, runs down his top picks for this year’s ADE Playground.

Cineville, established in 2009, is one of the leading collectives bringing together the leading films with the more ardent cinemagoers. Their membership scheme allows you to check out screenings in over 30 Dutch cinemas, and is the number one place to go for film buffess.

5 tips by Thomas for the ADE Film program (free access for ADE Card holders):

1/ Sähkö: The Movie
Dubbed the “holy grail of electronic music documentaries” by FACT magazine. Originally only released on a white label VHS tape, the movie that documents the Finnish techno label Sähkö Recordings in its mid-90s prime has been impossible to find and seen by only a handful of people. Despite that, it has attained a legendary cult online-status where fans have begged to see the film re-released. I'm very happy to say that can finally show a copy from the Finnish Audiovisual Archives at this year’s ADE. Program info here.

2/ EDC 2013: Under The Electric Sky
Over the last few years many Dutch promoters have been snapped-up by American firms, taking a very corporate approach to electronic music, and EDM in particular. Electric Daisy Carnival is one the flagship festivals of this EDM craze in the U.S., attracting more than 350,000 visitors per night in the Las Vegas dessert. Under The Electric Sky shows how big and mainstream EDM has become, with young fans coming over from all over the country, lots of fireworks and Dutch DJs as the EDM heroes. At the heart of the story is EDC founder Pasquale Rotella who personally convinced Awakenings owner Rocco Veenboer to take a more international approach at last year’s ADE festival. Under The Electric Sky just might give us a glimpse of what the future could bring for the European electronic music scene. Program info here.

3/ Escape to Olganitz
If Electric Daisy Carnival is the capital of the EDM scene in the U.S., Nachtdigital is the mecca of underground electronic music in Europe. Although both festivals are held in the summer and focus on electronic music, the differences are much larger than the similarities. Founded in a back garden by a group of friends in their teenage years, Nachtdigital has become a yearly get-to-together with a legendary status for both DJs and visitors, although it can only host 3,000 of them per year. After seeing the glitz and glamour of EDC, it is very hard not to smile to when you see that the people that started Nachtdigital are still cleaning horse manure on-site a week before last year's event. Program info here.

4/ I Dream of Wires
I Dream of Wires is both a very thorough documentary and a love declaration to the modular synthesizer. Through interviews with more than a hundred producers and fans, I Dream of Wires shows how the modular synthesizer has changed and shaped (electronic) music. During ADE The Melkweg will screen the 102-minute theater version, but if that’s not enough: a 4-hour Hardcore edition has been released on DVD and Blu-ray. Program info here.

5/ I Love Kuduro
Kuduro (literally meaning 'hard arse') is an urban movement that was born in Angola during the Civil War over ten years ago. Created in discos and raves in downtown Luanda, Kuduro has become a mixture of house, techno and traditional Angolan rhythms. I Love Kuduro follows several artists and gives a great insight in how this movement became so popular in Angola, and why it could reach the same status in other countries. Program info here.

Other ADE Playground tips by Thomas Hosman:

4DSOUND
Ever since I discovered the 4DSound system I have been very curious to hear for myself how this system could change the way we perceive electronic music in clubs. I look forward to hearing Vladislav Delay, Max Cooper and Stimming perform live on this all-surround installation. More info here.
