Interview with Ferry Corsten, about the re-release of his large hit Punk with brand new remixes out now on Flashover recordings
For weeks now number 1 at Beatport trance chart is the brand new Arty mix on the large Ferry Corsten trance anthem Punk. The big success of that new package of mixes was definitely the proof that the idea to bring it back to life in 2011 was a very wise and absolutely smashing one. Currently there aren’t any trance dj sets without including any of those new remixes so there is no escape from them. In addition his radio show Corsten Countdown is going extremely well and in 27th of April will celebrate its 200th episode with a special Corsten way event. The large amount of respect that he gets from fellow superstar djs like dj Tiesto or Armin van Buuren and the number of crowds that he manage to attract to each of his performance all over the globe is a testament of Ferry’s contribution to the history of electronic dance music phenomenon as we experience it today in a worldwide scale.
Before moving to this great interview with Ferry about the grand success of the rerelease of Punk lets take a look on his achievements so far. If there’s one thing a superstar DJ will learn after years racking up frequent flyer miles and playing for thousands of fans, it’s that they are only as prominent as their last album tour. Award‐winning Ferry Corsten, someone who can easily be referred to as the DJ’s DJ, has taken this advice to heart and emerged as one of the most prominent Dutch jocks in the world. Through constant touring , fan outreach, a weekly radioshow and podcast and an abundance of self‐produced dance hits, he has managed to captivate the imagination of dance music fans around the world.
Ferry Corsten — who was named Best Producer of the Year by the Ericsson Music Awards and Best Trance DJ by the Ibiza DJ Awards, and consistently ranked as one of the top 10 DJs in the world— is best known for his creativity as a music producer and his unique up‐tempo, big‐room trance and house sound. His performances as a DJ never fails fans to keep coming back and wanting more. It is a chest‐pounding sum of the electronic music influences he turned to, going as far back as the age of nine when he started collecting records.
In 2010 Ferry introduced the unforgettable “Once Upon a Night” compilation series, which became his vehicle for touring, sharing upfront music, and shining the spotlight on bright new talent. It was the first time in several years that Ferry had taken on a compilation project. But the timing was perfect, since world touring gave him an insider glimpse to the music emerging from different parts of the world.
While Ferry’s “Once Upon a Night” concept has taken the world by storm, it also served as an impetus to starting Premier Recordings. His latest project is a joint venture between his own label, Flashover Recordings and Black Hole Recordings. “We’re still both our own platform and label, but we came up with Premier together,” he explains. Whenever they find a big record, the two companies join forces for an extra large release.
Ferry Corsten fans can also look forward to his upcoming artist album, which will present his always‐cutting edge take on electronic music. For now, the details are strictly confidential, but Ferry assures us that he’s fully committed to conjuring the right hook lines and melodies while bringing about some exciting collaborations. “It’s definitely going to be an album that you can classify as trance, but it’s way more groovy and way more danceable,” he sums.
With a massive following on Facebook and Twitter and almost 10 million you tube views, Ferry has also become an ambassador for dance music as social media resource. “It’s the only way you can directly connect with your fans without them having to wait for anything,” he states. Just as he is into his equipment in the studio, Ferry fans can have all the coolest apps and gadgets to keep in touch with him wherever he is! At www.FerryCorsten.com they can download official Blackberry, Android, iPhone and iPad apps. He is also a co‐promoter of the entertainment applications Pulse Game (tap game) and the Cue. Play.DJ , (an iphone/ipad DJ Mixer).
Corsten’s Countdown is Ferry’s interactive radio show, which he launched in 2007 and is currently available in over 35 countries nationwide such as Digitally Imported (DI.fm), Sirius XM Radio and 27 leading radio stations in The Netherlands, Brazil, UK, Australia, Argentina and the Philippines, to name a few. You can vote for your favourite track of the month on his Facebook fanpage. The show is also downloadable as a podcast on itunes.
By constantly traveling around the world, Ferry has been exposed to some of the wasteful practices going on, at the expense of animals and the environment. “When I go to the more tropical countries in the world such as the Philippines,” he elaborates, “where I see all the dynamite fishing and how coral reefs are deteriorating before my eyes.” As an ambassador for the Dutch World Wildlife Fund team, he is leveraging the exposure his events afford him to raise awareness about the WWF. “I pass on the earth because every generation has the right to enjoy its beauty — just as I am doing, and the previous generations have done." As music makes the world go round, so does sending out a powerful message to help save our planet.
Look out for Ferry at a nightclub, festival arena or large‐scale venue near you. For more information please visit www.ferrycorsten.com Physical copies of his CDs and all sorts of merchandise can be purchased at the Ferry Corsten Shop. The album is also available as download at iTunes.
2011 started with the big success of Punk so it’s the best time to talk with Ferry about it:
Interview is written and conducted by Dimitri Kechagias "Flux Bpm On The Move" : www.fluxbpmonthemove.blogspot.com
Dimitri: First of all would be great to recall for us when the original version of “Punk” was recorded and under which circumstances?
Ferry Corsten: I produced the track in 2002. It was something completely different then I used to produced with regards to the sound. It was more of electro than the trance sound that I produced. In that time you could hype a track via white label vinyl. We sent it out as Funk Einsatz instead of Ferry Corsten. You can see a reference in the video of Punk. We wanted to see the reactions to the new sound. The reactions were great!
Dimitri: Punk is back once again. Did you had many requests to play this track in your events and do you have a particular memory from a performance that you drop this massive tune?
Ferry Corsten: Definitely, and I still love dropping this tune. I still is a festival tune and especially with the new mixes, a pleasure to play. I love dropping the tune and hearing everyone sing along to the melody. On a large event scale it’
Dimitri: The brand new “Punk” mixes are having big success at Beatport with Arty reaching number 1 and Marlo remix was at number 3. Would you like to tell us why you choose those particular artists to revamp this classic and if you have received other remixes too that were not good enough to get a proper release.
Ferry Corsten: Arty is a big talent that has released a couple of track on my label. He’s just the man of the moment if you ask me. MaRLo can bring that specific energetic sound that I thought we needed on this remix package. Cosmic Gate did a rework for their essential mix and we just had to include this one. Sidney Samson is the electro house king of the moment so he was definitely the right man to do that genre. Audien has style that’s always interesting and I am very happy with his rework. We also got in remixes that didn’t make the release.
Dimitri: Are you working for a brand new album at the moment? Can you give us a small taste of what we are going to get in it? Are you going to include any vocal tracks and can you reveal maybe some of the voices that will be included?
Ferry Corsten: I will include vocal tracks but I can’t reveal any of the collabs I am working on at the moment. More about that soon. The album will be a mix of styles varying from house to trance, maybe even other genres
Dimitri: You are going to perform on the USA ASOT 500 event. Are you excited to be part of Armin’s radio show celebration and are we going to see something similar organized for Ferry’s Corsten Countdown too?
Ferry Corsten: Yeah it will be fun to perform at the ASOT 500 show. We’re celebrating the 200th episode soon and we’ll doing something else. Always happy to play big crowds and good events! Looking forward to be back in Miami.
Dimitri: Everyone is feeling really sad at the moment because of the recent disastrous earthquake in Japan and even release of radioactivity. Is it possible to tell us your feelings when you first heard about the news and is Japan a country with great nightclubs that you love to perform there?
Ferry Corsten: I've been visiting Japan often in my career as a dance music producer and DJ since the 90's. I have always loved its bustling cities, beautiful landscapes and picture perfect views. With its recent tragedies, it hurts me deeply that it will take time for Japan to rebuild it's country. But if there is one country that can rebuild itself to its original pride and joy. It would be Japan.
Dimitri: Are you going to release soon a brand new chapter of your extremely successful compilation Once upon a Night? If yes did you start already working on the selection process for it?
Ferry Corsten: Right now I am really focusing on my artist album now. So no Once Upon A Night this year I am afraid. But the series will continue, don’t worry about that!
Dimitri: Summer is just around the corner and one of the event that you will perform is of course Tomorrowland in Belgium. Have you ever performed in this event and are you looking forward to be there this summer??
Ferry Corsten: Yes I have performed there a couple of times and the festival is great! It’s 3 days now and it will be huge!
Ferry Corsten’s Punk remixed is out now to all the usual download stores.
