- Keynote speech: Kyle Dixon & Michael Stein
Soundtrack music that keeps you on your toes – How composers Kyle Dixon & Michael Stein crafted an original sound including hypnotizing Stranger Things soundtrack.
How do you create an original soundtrack that keeps the audience on edge? And how do you keep innovating that original soundtrack when the series is going on for more than four seasons? Composers Kyle Dixon and Michael Stein will answer these and more questions during their keynote. With their hypnotizing, electronic and bone-chilling themes they crafted a soundtrack that is well known by TV-lovers as the ‘Stranger Things’ soundtrack. The Netflix series has been known for its use of music, but it’s the score written by Dixon and Stein that really brings the fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana and their characters alive. While their music for early seasons focused on the timeless sound of '80s analog synthesizers, they'd soon harness melodies and atmospherics befitting Eleven and Mike's interdimensional struggle.
With their work for ‘Stranger Things’ they have launched themselves as modern composers for film and television, but they don’t stop there. They also work on several documentaries and movies, like Joaquin del Paso’s ‘The Hole in the Fence’ that received several awards and nominations. Furthermore, they created various soundscapes for VR-installations, that prove this duo is versatile and always innovating their use of music.
In this keynote Dixon and Stein will share their vision on innovative scoring with glitchy and quirky sounds. At heart, Dixon and Stein are avid students of electronic music history who constantly explore new methods of composition and scoring. While they have a clear facility for soundtracking the supernatural and otherworldly, Dixon and Stein have an equal interest in scoring quieter, decidedly human drama.

SPEAKERS
Karl Heortweard
Karl Heortweard (1988) is a composer for international films and TV programmes. After living in Stockholm for a period of time, where he developed the basics of writing for media, the frustration of not knowing how to proceed led to the plan to record his trajectory with the idea of eventually writing a book about it. Back in the Netherlands, he was determined to be a film composer and has been able to achieve this over the subsequent years. In 2017, he wrote the music for the Albanian film ‘Elvis Walks Home’ and ‘Love and Shukla’, an Indian film that was sold to Netflix. In 2019, 'Project Rembrandt' started which more than a million Dutch people watch every week and have aired three seasons so far. The film 'Whitestar' also went into cinemas that year, to which the sequel 'Silverstar' was made in 2022. During that period he also worked on other film productions such as 'Casanova's' (2020) and 'Zomer in Frankrijk' (2023) and the program 'Dreamschool' (2021) for the NPO. He also gives guest lectures and workshops on composition and making a career as a media composer at film festivals and universities. His experience, along with 56 other industry professionals, is now reflected in his book 'You Shoot, I Score!'. A guide that will help you you’re your own way, whether you are still exploring and looking for an education, searching for the best jobs for you, or considering to go to Hollywood.
