Managing Director of the global indie label to share his experiences at ADE of running a label formed in the industry’s golden era that made it through the hardest of times to become a genuine global player.

30 years ago as a young music fan and aspiring manager with little working knowledge of the music industry, Martin Goldschmidt formed a label with distribution manager Pete Lawrence, called it Cooking Vinyl, and started releasing records. Despite that lack of experience, things worked out and have continued to do so ever since, although the past three decades have been something of a roller-coaster ride with plenty of highs and lows and steep learning curves.
These days Cooking Vinyl is a genuinely global player with offices in the US and Australia, and a reputation as one of Europe’s prime artist-focused independent labels, inspiring an enviable loyalty among its artist roster. It is also in the vanguard of music companies offering innovative services-only deals that claim no stake in artists’ copyrights. Artists signed to Cooking Vinyl include Marilyn Manson, Billy Bragg, Röyksopp, Madness, James, Gary Numan, Amanda Palmer, The Pretty Reckless, Groove Armada, The Cult, and The Prodigy. “I am a very lucky person, being able to get paid for spending time working on my hobby for 30 years,” Goldschmidt said. “And I'm looking forward to sharing what I've learnt along the way at Amsterdam Dance Event.”
