1. To begin, it would be beneficial for you to share with us your three most significant accomplishments or objectives that you are particularly proud of achieving thus far in your professional career.
Greg Tomaz: Opening for industry heavyweights like Guy J, Nick Warren, Cubicolor, and Tim Engelhardt. Having releases on esteemed labels such as Mango Alley, RKP, and Pattern.
2. Could you elaborate on the reasons behind your decision to embark on the journey of DJing or producing electronic dance music?
Greg Tomaz: I’ve always been deeply inspired by music and its ability to evoke emotions and connect people. From a young age, I felt a strong desire to be a storyteller, to share experiences and emotions in a way that resonates with others. DJing and producing electronic dance music became the perfect medium for me to express myself. It allows me to weave my thoughts, emotions, and inspirations into soundscapes, creating a narrative that transcends words. Through music, I can tell my story in a way that speaks directly to the soul.
3. Could you please identify the three most influential producers who have shaped your decision to pursue a career in the electronic dance music industry?
Greg Tomaz: Simon Posford, Moshic and Guy J.
4. Could you please provide the top three tracks from the past that have had the most significant influence on your musical style and explain your reasoning?
Greg Tomaz: "Moshic - Messiah Of The Zohar", "Stiven Rivic, Michael & Levan - Justice", "Brian Cid - Truth Lies Ahead". I’ve always been drawn to the darker and more mystical side of progressive music. The tracks and artistry of these creators remain fresh in my mind, continuing to inspire me to produce music that embodies that same captivating vibe.
5. It would be wonderful to discuss your latest release Paradox and Waking Mind on Pattern. Kindly share the inspiration behind the creation of these 2 incredible tracks and provide insights into the thought process behind them.
Greg Tomaz: My latest EP, Paradox & Waking Mind, is out now on Pattern, and I’m really excited to share it with you.
Paradox is all about exploring contrasts—the push and pull between light and dark. It’s a journey where opposites collide but still find a way to exist together. I wanted the track to capture that sense of balance, showing how something simple can feel complex at the same time. For me, it’s a reminder of how life often blends different emotions and truths into one beautiful experience.
On the other hand, Waking Mind is about awakening and self-discovery. It reflects the moment when stillness turns into awareness, like the clarity that comes with a new day. I built this track layer by layer, with deep grooves and melodic textures, to create something introspective and meaningful—something that feels like a personal journey.
I hope these tracks connect with you in their own way!
6. Could you please provide an estimate of the production time and describe the production process in a simplified manner?
Greg Tomaz: I use Ableton for music production, and my process typically starts with crafting the drums and bassline to establish a solid foundation for the groove. Once I’m satisfied with the groove, I build the melodies and atmospheric elements around it. This has been my approach for the past few months, as I’ve been focusing on creating music that is heavily groove-driven. I completed Paradox and Waking Mind within a month, although, typically, it takes me about one to two months to finish a track.
7. Could you elaborate on any specific technical challenges or obstacles you encountered during the production of that particular track?
Greg Tomaz: I’m a self-taught producer, and most of what I’ve learned has come from exploring content and resources available online. Finishing a track is usually quite challenging for me—something often goes wrong, especially during the mixdown phase. However, while working on this EP, everything just flowed naturally. The process felt seamless, allowing me to finish these tracks at a much faster pace than usual.
8. Which music composition software or hardware do you prefer, and why? What are your thoughts on the recent trend towards producing music using more analogue equipment, with less or no digital software?
Greg Tomaz: I’ve been using Ableton for over a decade, and I absolutely love it. Its user-friendly interface and fluid workflow make it my go-to tool for music production.
9. Could you select your top three record labels, including the one that released the track we discussed in this interview? Please provide a brief explanation of why these labels are significant to you and the music industry as a whole.
Greg Tomaz: Pattern and UV have always been dream labels for me, and I’m grateful to have had the opportunity to release on Pattern. Besides these, I’m a big fan of Mango Alley and Juicebox Music. Their releases, with their chuggy and groovy progressive vibes, constantly inspire me.
10. Please note for all new talents who read this interview that you may find inspiration in it. Additionally, please share any technical tips related to your DJing or music productions. Furthermore, any personal or music business advice that has contributed to your progress and is worth sharing with new emerging talents would be greatly appreciated.
Greg Tomaz: Consistency is definitely the key to growth. By sitting down and working on music regularly, I’ve been able to improve and refine my skills over time. The industry is constantly evolving, and it’s crucial to adapt in order to stay relevant and thrive. Embracing change, staying dedicated, and being disciplined in the process are what ultimately drive success, helping you grow not just as a producer, but as an artist.
