ADE Arts & Culture returns for its third edition, continuing to find the artistic connections between electronic music and other art forms. For its 2023 edition, the program focuses on today's artists, the positive impact electronic music has on its creators and listeners, and broadening visitors’ horizons. Alongside the previously announced standout piece ATMEN at Internationaal Theater Amsterdam, the first events include collaborations between Het HEM and Horst, Amsterdams Andalusisch Orkest and Mary Lake, and De School and Boris Acket.
The 2023 edition of ADE Arts & Culture is rapidly shaping up with a wide array of cultural collaboration projects including 'New HHHorizons' by Het HEM and arts and music organisation Horst, to be showcased at Thomaskerk. At Bimhuis, a one-off synthesis awaits with the Amsterdams Andalusisch Orkest and DJ Mary Lake blending techno and Arabic music. Boris Acket takes over De School with 'TIJDSDUUR', a month-long exhibition that challenges conventional notions of time, inviting musical artists Jameszoo, Helena Basilova, Spekki Webu and others to bring the works to life.
Further enriching the roster is 'Rooted in Culture' at Tolhuistuin, a deep dive into electronic music's origins intertwined with black history and the LGBTQAI+ community. 'Recharge & Revolt' at the Melkweg Expo investigates rave culture as a powerful political instrument. Stadsarchief Amsterdam’s ‘Wie Danst Is Vrij’ allows visitors to dive into Amsterdam's club culture from 1980 until now to celebrate the city's unique nightlife, and the sounds of 'River Without Banks' will resound in the Portuguese Synagogue, creating a mesmerizing two-piano concert atmosphere. Many more events will be added to the ADE Arts & Culture lineup in the lead up to the event, with details soon to be disclosed.
Het HEM x Horst: New HHHorizons
It's almost abundant to say that both cultural and arts centre Het HEM and the arts and music organisation Horst are on the forefront of connecting electronic music and other art forms. They team up to present 'New HHHorizons' at De Thomaskerk. Four new interdisciplinary live performances are the centre of the programme, each offering visitors an immersive art experience. Join Dooha Ritus, a performance project by Omen Wapta x Joone Joonam with Woody 92,Søren Siebel’s dance performance, M I M I’s live hybrid performance, SKY H1 & Mika Oki‘s live AV performance and Ja Ja Ja Nee Nee Nee’s listening sessions on Thursday and Friday in the Thomaskerk.
Amsterdams Andalusisch Orkest x Mary Lake
Join this unique clash of club culture and string instruments by Amsterdam Dance Event at Bimhuis, where techno and electro meet Arabic music. Resident Mary Lake has an international character as a DJ and producer and knows how to introduce experiment without ever losing her crowd for one moment. This concert with Andalusisch Orkest from Amsterdam sees star musician Hamza Amrani play different string instruments, like the ud and rabab, and travels through different times and places of music.
To Dance is to be Free
Dive into Amsterdam's club culture from 1980 until now at Stadsarchief Amsterdam to celebrate the city's unique nightlife and the cultural and social value it has on its community. Expect a moving, educating, and inspiring tribute to clubs like RoXY, IT, Mazzo, Club11, Trouw, and still-existing clubs like NYX, De School, and Garage Noord, mixed with elements of emancipation, experiment, and creativity that make Amsterdam's club culture unlike any other city.
Boris Acket presents TIJDSDUUR
In this second iteration of contemporary composer and audiovisual artist Boris Acket's series 'DURATION' the artist heads to De School for a month-long takeover. This exhibition is inspired and derived from a work featured in the exhibition: 'Durée'. Acket challenges the human perception of time by ritualistic performative installations that continuously change shape during that month and move spaces. The exhibition is opened with a string of performances on ADE Wednesday, with Slagwerk Den Haag, Jameszoo, Elsemarijn Bruijs, Helena Basilova and Spekki Webu,who bring the works to life in a completely new way, together with platform Minimal Collective. The performances are free of charge to visit.
Rooted in Culture
House culture is rooted in black history, the LGBTQAI+ community, underground clubs, and in the freedom of expression. Get to know the club culture better through movement, education, and inspiration with Lynnee Denise and Steppin Into Tomorrow, or join Zev's house dance workshop. DJ collective Chill on Tuesday brings the grooves back-to-back with Chocolate Brown on ADE Friday.

Recharge & Revolt
Melkweg Expo showcases the group exhibition 'Recharge & Revolt', opening on ADE Wednesday. This exhibition is curated by Ukrainian guest curators Anton Shebetko and Maria Vtorushina focuses on rave culture as a powerful political instrument. After the Revolution of Dignity and this turning point in Ukrainian society, the techno and rave scenes flourished, giving rise to significant clubs and parties that have become an integral part of contemporary Ukrainian society, especially for members of the queer community. Recharge and Revolt explores and celebrates themes like queer identity, queer visibility, utopia, queer time, and the solidarity that has been fostered through raves.
24Classics presents Gay Guerilla
Gay Guerilla is a monumental and iconic piece by composer Julius Eastman. 24 Classics presents an interdisciplinary re-interpretation of this iconic piece in the form of a live ritual, together with artists Boris Acket and Christian Guerematchi. Pianists Helena Basilova and Vivienne Cheng play amidst a powerful audiovisual installation.
Harmonic Resonance
Unveil the hidden dimensions of sound at 'Harmonic Resonance', an immersive cymatics experiences at museum Embassy of the Free Mind. Derek Lomas is a professor of Positive AI at TU Delft and a passionate innovator in human-centered design. His work probes the harmony between AI and human cognition, with an emphasis on the interaction of music and the mind. He brings his unique insights into how the resonance of sound shapes our experiences and interactions to ADE Arts & Culture.
Mark to the Music
This collaboration between Museum van de Geest, Outsider Art, and Amsterdam Dance Events centres around the de-stressing and spiritual power of electronic music and sound through a guided visual meditation. This sixty-minute experience at the Museum van de Geest in Hermitage Amsterdam takes you on a trip through rare electronic music and hidden gems played by Nelly.
River Without Banks
ADE and the Jewish Cultural Quarter present River Without Banks, a composition for two pianos with Leo Svirsky and Reinier van Houdt. This concert takes place at the Portuguese Synagogue, a seventeenth-century building where only, very occasionally, hundreds of candles and impressive acoustics form the backdrop of unique concerts.
