OUR STORYTELLERS
Dominicus Church Pastor Arjan Broers will introduce our storytellers: Chicha “The Drummer”, Grace Workala, Jacques Vedel Du Boisbaudry and Sonja Groot Obbink. These remarkable and inspiring people have experienced both the brutality of life on the street and the freedom of letting go of material possessions, schedules and status.
THE CLUB IN A CHURCH
The artistic gathering will be held at the neo-gothic Dominicus Church in the heart of Amsterdam. Clubs and churches have more in common than you might think. Both scenes feel like a true ‘home’ for people, places where people find meaning, connection and warmth. The church as spiritual dance floor.
FOR WHO?
House of Hope is for music fans, nightcrawles, DJs and anyone seeking connection and more meaning in life, regardless of faith, origin, age or orientation. The event joins the movement #WijMakenPlek by also welcoming undocumented migrants, homeless people and others who often don’t have access to concerts or the dance floor.
While the spoken word will be in Dutch, the music will convey the message in a language that is universal and transcends words. We’ll look after both the soul and the body by serving free pancakes for everyone so you can keep on dancing.
- Reflections presents: A live music and meditation experience with Jessie Marcella & Kat Pither
Reflections presents: A live music and meditation experience with Jessie Marcella & Kat Pither
Launched in May 2022, Reflections is Anjunadeep’s sister imprint and the third label under the Anjuna umbrella. Founded by two-time GRAMMY-nominated trio Above & Beyond and based in South London, Reflections is Anjuna’s new home for ambient, downtempo and alternative electronic music.
On 21st October, Reflections will make its Amsterdam debut, hosting an intimate live music and meditation experience as part of the ADE Arts & Culture program. For this hour-long session, Reflections invited Yogi Bare founder Kat Pither to lead a unique guided meditation, accompanied by a live performance from one of Reflections’ most exciting new talents, Jessie Marcella. Performing music from her latest label release ‘Untitled’, Jessie will perform an ambient electronic set with live clarinet.“
Our two record labels, Anjunabeats and Anjunadeep were born on the dancefloor. For over 20 years these labels have taken us, our music, and our artists, to dancefloors across the world. The third Anjuna record label is our new downtempo and ambient imprint called Reflections, and we are delighted to share it with you. Reflections is born from all those moments in between the dancefloors - the mornings after, the nights apart, the journeys shared along the way. Those moments of Reflection.” - Above & Beyond
Hailing from Leeds, British composer and producer Jessie Marcella joined the Reflections family earlier this year with her EP ‘Untitled’. Classically trained on the clarinet, Jessie fuses together both live and electronic instrumentation in her work. In recent years Jessie has honed her craft. Her compositions are melancholic, deeply emotive, and entirely captivating. Ranging from atmospheric soundscape to ambient electronica, her sound has led to support from BBC Radio 1 and BBC Introducing.
- The Golden Hour #12 w/ Portrait XO
Welcome to The Golden Hour, that moment in time when the sun passes the horizon and floods the air with a warm and soothing light. The Golden Hour marks a counterpoint in every day, providing us with new perspectives and insights. In this time and space, we connect people through a deep listening experience. Each session, we invite extraordinary artists to share the music most meaningful to them. Listening to these tracks and uncovering the stories behind them, we get a better understanding of our guest's motives and musical journey.
For this edition we have Portrait XO as our guest. She is a singer, songwriter, producer and an interactive installation artist. In her work she uses experimental approaches to writing, researching computational creativity and human-machine collaboration. An example is her co-creating of lyrics with an artificial intelligent version of her voice and performing together as a ‘neural vocal duet’.
We are curious to hear stories from such a forward-thinking artist and listen to pieces of music she holds dear.
The session will consist of a showcase by Portrait XO and The Golden Hour (interview+listening session).
Doors open at 14h30 and the session will start at 15h.

- Where There Is Light
The need to recalibrate, reflect, and center mental wellness after uncertain years drove artist Tamara Shogaolu to develop WHERE THERE IS LIGHT. Inspired by the practice of forest bathing and by the Panamanian rainforest, WHERE THERE IS LIGHT is an interactive installation that merges mental wellness with nature through technology by allowing visitors to immerse themselves in a rainforest.
Through WHERE THERE IS LIGHT we hope to create a space where we can surrender to calmness and focus on our senses as a way to be present in the moment without the grief of what was and the fear of what could have been.Visitors will be able to explore the rainforest lidar data projections at their own pace and interact with the space through movement and breath with the forest reacting to their movements and breathing. The visuals will be paired with a sound installation of sound recording in the rainforest in Panama over a 24hr cycle. The visuals and sounds will be constantly changing from day to night, providing visitors a different experience depending on the time of day of their visit. The installation will run over the course of five days at the central ADE hub and iconic church Westerkerk. This experience will be free and open to the public with the ultimate hope of motivating all of us to take a moment during our days to connect with nature and ultimately protect the sacred spaces that are rainforests.
The installation is commissioned by Amsterdam Dance Event.

- Within Without II
In Within Without II, artist Nick Verstand examines our subconscious by light art, music and modern dance. The performance symbolizes the transformation of the self through different stadia. Let yourself be transported into a dream world of light and darkness, sound and space.
“People will do anything, no matter how absurd, in order to avoid facing their own souls. One does not become enlightened by imagining figures of light, but by making the darkness conscious.” ― Carl Gustav Jung
Verstand joins forces with Sedrig Verwoert (choreographer & dancer), Wanderwelle (music), Wes Broersen (interaction designer), Marijn Cinjee (music & sound design), Jasmine Karimova and Pitou (vocals). Together with Reina Trifunović, Alanna Archibald, Comfort Kondehson, Winter Wieringa and Adam Russel-Jones, Verwoert will provide the performance with dance - a three dimensional pas de deux included.
On the 19th of October, the new performance Within Without II is to be seen exclusively in Carré as the opening event of ADE, as part of the Arts & Culture program. The first edition of the audiovisual liveshow in 2021 was visited by thousands of people.
- 24classics presents: 3VIOLAS x Vincent Rang
24classics is a classical music discovery service. By seeking new alliances and breaking boundaries and we are making classical music new. For ADE we have combined two different worlds in the iconic central building of the Zuiderkerk. The collaboration between 3VIOLAS and Vincent Rang will take you into a mesmerizing hypnotic world.
In this new audio-visual alliance the boundaries of minimal music, nature and art will be pushed. They combine, get ready for it, sounds from a live tree composed into a minimal music piece for 3 violas with a scenography by Vincent Rang. His slowly evolving underwater landscapes, created in an aquarium, will take you into a different world. The result will be a unique experience in which many worlds collide.
Vincent Rang (1989) is an experimental visual artist working primarily with moving image as a medium. He believes in the power of moving image and audio as a door into another world. He explores themes of scale, time experience, natural patters and symbiosis with audio.
His gaze is often directed towards the natural dances of life. He observes, captures and re-arranges these various patterns, from wind patterns, water currents, blooming flowers, landscapes and rock formations, to create abstract audio-visual experiences, offering the viewer enough space to find their own truth and interpretation in the work, and most importantly, to feel them.
His latest ongoing project ‘Pillars Of Creation’ focuses around a water-filled aquarium in which he creates a live choreography using various materials such as inks, plants and light, which he captures with a macro camera and then projects it on a large screen, creating mesmerizing larger than life living paintings. This project led to the creating of Home, a live audio-visual show which he performed in Het muziekgebouw aan ’t IJ and the Nxt Museum.
- 3VIOLAS
Hessel Moeselaar, Floris Faber & Geerten Feller are 3VIOLAS. An unconventional, dynamic ensemble based in Amsterdam. Influenced and inspired by classical, pop, minimal, electronic, and film music, 3VIOLAS pursues an adventurous path by deconstructing and combining musical genres. Ever since their formation in 2015, 3VIOLAS has increasingly been gaining attention in the Dutch music scene. 3VIOLAS is a regular guest at the Amsterdam Grachtenfestival, Uitmarkt, Ruigklassiek, and The Royal Concertgebouw. In 2019, 3VIOLAS became Artist in Residence at VondelCS in Amsterdam. This is the so-called Media-Culture lab of the AVROTROS. Here they launched a meditative series of concerts called MINDVIOLNESS. 3VIOLAS can also be found more "underground" in musical collaborations with organizations such as Talking Trees and Classical Music Rave. 3VIOLAS creates a unique sound by programming both their own compositions and improvisations and music by other artists and composers.

Orphax“I make music that buzzes in your head.” Under his Orphax-moniker, Sietse van Erve wields his minimalist music as a stream-of-consciousness manifestation, forging sound from electronic and acoustic instruments, other people’s compositions morphed beyond recognition and/or lo-fi droning loops. An Orphax performance prompts the listener to expand their own headspace to awesome, uncharted domains. van Erve is also founder of the cutting edge label Moving Furniture.Sietse van Erve - ElectronicsTrio
Konstantinidou, Rosa, La Berge (electronics, visuals, improv)Performing as a trio especially for ADE, these three multi-disciplinary mavericks work at the extreme boundaries of sound, image and text. Cultural Crossovers
- Creatures of the Night
Fashion is about conveying desire. Vanderwilt desires to design leathers that will gently intertwine with you. To create a second skin. An adaptive layer enabling you to transcend convention. Propelling you to tread wherever you fancy. Vanderwilt will be exhibiting leather outfits as seen on stage with the likes of Dave Clarke, David Guetta, Sandra St.Victor and many more, including their latest project for Maxime Duvall who will perform ‘Creatures of the night’ in the Vanderwilt store.
The Elusive Self - Part 1 - by MC de Waal
TORCH Gallery presents The Elusive Self, a one-week-only exhibition by MC de Waal during Amsterdam Dance Event. This collaborative and multidisciplinary project is centered around a leather suit, the result of an extensive search for the right designers and materials. The outfit represents the ideal image of an assertive amazon that the artist has fantasized about since childhood.
Worn by a lifelike wax statue, the suit becomes a disorienting statement piece. The v-shaped silhouette and corresponding photographs of the three basic geometric shapes refer to two kindred spirits of De Waal from a different time: German singer and performer Klaus Nomi and German artist and choreographer Oskar Schlemmer, who regarded his costumes for the mathematical choreography of the Triadisches Ballett (1922) as 'walking architecture'.
Also on view will be documentation of a performance done by De Waal in the suit, to the new Italo disco song Creatures of the Night by her alter ego Maxime Duvall. The exhibition is completed by a new triptych of paintings by the Rotterdam collective KAMP HORST inspired by the song.
About the artist
Having always worked on the crossroads between photography, performance, music, fashion and the club scene, De Waal is a seamless fit with ADE. Years of modeling taught her how to use the body as a means of expression. Publicly pushing the boundaries of self-alteration, she deals with the concepts of human identity and the constructible man.
Rotterdam artist collective KAMP HORST is known for its intense paintings with comic-like
compositions, depicting absurd humour and strange combinations of persons, animals and objects.
Collaborators:
KAMP HORST: paintings
Vanderwilt & MC de Waal: leather suit design
Italo Connection: Creaters of the Night remix
Silas Schletterer & Maxime Duvall: soundscape

- If You Could See Me Now
Three performers reshape a chilled-out club dance into a mesmerizing wave-like motion until everything morphs into one big chunk of energy. At maximal and sweaty exertion, their incessant movement flow reinvents itself through luminous, ever-changing impressions. Seemingly casual yet with great precision, If You Could See Me Now urges another, closer look.
Arno Schuitemaker created the performance against the backdrop of a rapidly changing reality to interrogate how to deal with things when they no longer are the way they were. How do we shift and realign our focus? How to keep going and move forward? From ecstasy to turmoil, from a meticulous build-up to its fracturing, If You Could See Me Now goes right to the core of a transformative perspective.
about Arno Schuitemaker
Through a rigorous integration of movement, light, and electronic music, Arno Schuitemaker, based in Amsterdam, creates performances one has to experience. His contemporary works immerse the audience, each in their unique way. Rooted in the pages of his diary, they transform into hyperphysical and embodied meditations on life, and, consequently, the way we (can) engage with the world. The performances receive praise for the inventive forms that Arno creates to express and give meaning to universal themes. They have been presented at renowned venues and contemporary performing arts festivals in more than 25 countries.

In the mid 1990's, 20 French urban dancers join together for a three-day rehearsal in a closed-down boarding school located at the heart of a forest to share one last dance. They then make one last party around a large sangria bowl. Quickly, the atmosphere becomes charged and a strange madness will seize them the whole night. If it seems obvious to them that they have been drugged, they neither know by who nor why. And it's soon impossible for them to resist to their neuroses and psychoses, numbed by the hypnotic and the increasing electric rhythm of the music. After the premiere of ClubKultur Berlin last year at ADE at Melkweg Cinema, this night we dive back into Berlin's club culture with a shorter version of the film and the new short film Beyond Sound. After the films, with some guests from the Berlin club scene, we look back at the film made in pandemic times and at the situation now.
- ClubKultur Berlin
Since the fall of the Berlin Wall, Berlin has been considered the superlative of the club scene. With the pandemic, an industry and subculture, along with their income, and almost taboo-free retreats and colorful personalities, have disappeared. Will there be a return, and if so, what new form of CLUB CULTURE will emerge? What influence does the dying of the clubs have on the mental health of those for whom clubs were not just for celebrating, but also a place of work or space where they could live out lust and vice in a value-free manner? The directors Leonie Gerner & Andrea Schumacher have produced a critical, fast-paced documentary. A documentation in which club operators, musicians, DJs and psychologists have their say, and previously unpublished footage from the clubs can be shown.
- Beyond Sound
This short film draws a line between being a dj and dealing with elementary Life setbacks. The German DJs Heimlich Knüller and Madmotormiquel take us through their lives as Producers and DJs in Berlin. They dive deep into the beginnings of one of the biggest festivals "Fusion" and open the door into Berlin's famous Clubculture. Where Clubculter was born, why festivals influenced the Clubscene in Berlin and how it feels to grow old in that industry. The portrait was produced right before Covid hit the world.

- Legowelt: Ambient Trip Commander (2022) - Live Score
Ambient Trip Commander is the first feature animation film made by electro legend Danny Wolfers aka Legowelt. The animation, in which Wolfers’ paintings come to life, is hand drawn, frame-by-frame, using vibrant watercolors and is the achievement of a laborious process which took 18 months to accomplish. The original soundtrack was created by Wolfers himself, which he will perform live this evening.
