Interview with Dan Cooper

Dan Cooper is a trance music producer and DJ from London and is one half of the duo Stowers & Cooper. DJing since the age of 13 he fell in love with Trance music playing gigs across London at Ministry of Sound, Pacha, SeOne, Union and Hidden. He’s released music with DSR, Nocturnal Knights, FSOE, Pure Trance, Amsterdam Trance, Suanda and Alter Ego. Looking forward to much more!

1-Dimitris: 2023 just started but it will be cool to let us know how was 2022 for your career. Let us know about achievements or goals achieved that you are proud of.

Dan: 2022 was a huge year for me. I really focused on my solo productions releasing on Nocturnal Knights, Amsterdam Trance and DSR hitting top 20 in the trance chart with a couple of releases. I also had a Stowers & Cooper release on FSOE. I managed a couple of gigs in 2022 and getting back in front of a live crowd was special! Two highlights were putting together guest mixes for the Nocturnal Knights radio show and also for Dave Pearce Delirium show.

2-Dimitris: Do you have already some concrete plans for 2023 and if you are allowed to announce them to our readers please tell us what you are preparing for us in the coming months regarding releases and performances in gigs/festivals.

Dan: I have possibly my favourite track I’ve ever been involved in coming out on the 10th March! It’s an amazing Stowers & Cooper vocal trancer with my favourite vocalist right now, coming on FSOE!

Then I have a charity single towards to end of March on Alter Ego supporting Music Unity for Mental Health… a great charity based in the UK.

Couple of gigs lined up, firstly the Afterparty for Peach at Koko in Camden in April and then A Summer of Love Festival in the UK in August.

And more music! I’m learning all the time… this is the most exciting part!

3-Dimitris: It would be fantastic to talk about your track Red Flags with Ronnie on vocals. Please tell us how this track came about and what was the idea behind it.

Dan: I got sent the Red Flags vocal sung by the amazing Ronniee by Raz Nitzan owner of Amsterdam Trance and loved it straight away… the words rang true with things I’d seen in life. I wanted to give it a huge uplifting lead with an early Ferry Corsten sound to counter the deep meaning of the lyrics. I wanted the bass line to resonate with the classic A&B track On a good day. Then went from there!

4-Dimitris: How long it took you to produce Red Flags and can u describe the production process in simple steps?

Dan: The track took about a month and a half to get right. From speaking to Raz and Ronniee, getting the vocal and putting an initial demo together. Then fine tuning it in the studio. Sending it back to the label. Then back into the studio. The last part that was added was the arp in the intro.

5-Dimitris: Did you had any particular difficulties accomplishing that particular track or any specific production challenges.

Dan: Not really… technology is amazing these day!

6- Dimitris: Which music composition software or hardware you prefer and why? What is your opinion of the latest movement to produce music with more analogue equipment and with less or without any digital software?

Dan: I use FL Studio and very much enjoy it as a DAW… I am learning all the time which is what I love.

I’m enjoying the sounds of others using analogue equipment it’s amazing what they can do! Maybe I’ll get onto that one day!

7-Dimitris: Do you prefer instrumental dance tracks or you adore vocals? Please explain to us your position and  tell us how did you choose Ronnie and if it was great to work with her?

Dan: I like both vocals and instrumentals. This is my first vocal original and I loved the process. I know vocals can divide a crowd as you either like them or you don’t. Not everyone is going to like them. I can think of lots of vocal trance I don’t like but I can think of loads I do like! It was great to work with Ronniee as this was her first trance track which makes it special!

8-Dimitris: If you really like to produce vocal tracks which vocalist/singer or lyricist on electronic dance music you aspire to work with?

Dan: I’d love to work the That Girl. Her voice is beautiful!

9-Dimitris: Do you believe that artwork on your latest track is good and do you believe that artwork can attract listeners or record buyers? Can you mention the best artwork of a track ever released?

Dan: This artwork was amazing! The colours stand out and are so bright! I think people look for labels they know and trust to release quality music.

I love the FSOE artwork. Very simple but always eye catching.

10-Dimitris: In which label your latest release will be? Tell us your opinion about that particular label and your connection with them.

Dan: I’ve just released Red Flags on Amsterdam Trance. One of my favourite labels. The team are amazing and so professional.

11-Dimitris: Do you have your own record label? if yes tell us when did you set it up, the reasons behind this decision and your top 3 releases on the label so far plus 2 or 3 releases that we should look after from your label.

Dan: I don’t have my own label but DSR is my home label! Run by the amazing C-Systems boys.

12-Dimitris: Are you planning to complete an album or mix compilation soon? if yes please give us all the details about regarding tracks and how will look and sound like?

Dan: I did a mix compilation for Alter Ego last year. It was amazing to put together! No plans for another so far this year!

13-Dimitris:How much time do you spend promoting yourself in your social media and you see this as essential tool for self promotion and getting bookings too? Which social media is the one that seems to work better for you?

Dan: I spend a fair bit of time on social media promoting myself and supporting other artists. It’s tough getting bookings solely based on social media it’s better meeting people in person! I use Insta and Facebook as my main social media platforms.

14-Dimitris: Do you have your own radio show/podcast/twitch stream or Vlog(video blog)? If yes please give us a comment about it and how long it take you to prepare for it and if you are always excited to produce it?

Dan: I do a monthly radio show. Disciple of Trance broadcast the first Saturday of everyone month on RUAR radio. Then posted on my SoundCloud page.

15-Dimitris: From the gigs/festival performances confirmed so far for 2023 in which ones are you most excited to perform and why?

Dan: Can’t wait to play Peach afterparty in Camden. Peach was the club I went to every week when I was a young teenager so to play for them is amazing!

Then I can honestly say I beyond excited to play for A Summer of Love Festival in august. The Anomaly boys will put on a huge event with an amazing line up!

16-Dimitris: Please share your most funny and most serious incident that happen to you during your DJ performance?

Dan: Not during my set but right after… I was DJing an event and at the end of the night the promote stole all the takings and didn’t pay the DJs… so at 0400am there was a load of DJs chasing the promoter down the road through the streets of London trying to get paid. Made me laugh!

17-Dimitris: Are you enjoying to visit music conferences and do you have any plans to attend any of them in 2023:

Dan: I love ADE… try and go as often as possible. I went to Miami music conference a few years back but mainly for Ultra rather than the conference!

18-Dimitris: Do you have an agent that organize your performances and gigs or are you taking care of them? If you do have one agency please tell us what is so special and you work with them.

Dan: I don’t have an agent/ manager! But maybe down the line… need someone to organize me!

19-Dimitris: Please note for all the new talents that read this interview to get some inspiration from you any technical tips in relation to your DJing or music productions. Also any piece of personal or music business' advice that has helped you to progress even further and is worth telling to the new upcoming talents.

Dan: Keep learning. Don’t be afraid to ask for help.

20-Dimitris: Many DJs who are producers too they offer online masterclasses or teach to music production courses. If you are offering any of these services please tell us about it.

Dan: There’s so many amazing musicians offering these classes… I’m definitely the student not teacher! Check out James Dymond’s masterclasses.

21-Dimitris: Is there a club classic that you would like to remix or rework in 2023? Do you attempt often to do your own bootlegs of classics?

Dan: I’ve done a bootleg of York - The Awakening and my own edit of Cosmic Gate - Exploration of Space… there may be more to come this year but you’ll have to wait and see

22-Dimitris: Vinyl sales are rising and there is strong demand for vinyl releases? What is the reason behind that trend and do you see it as a positive development?

Dan: I love the vinyl sound and they are really collectible! Having different ways to enjoy music is great!

23-Dimitris: Many artist right now attempt to come closer to their fan base and use the meta verse in order to offer exclusive content to their most dedicated followers. Do you have any plans to do the same and what is your opinion about this plan to grow on metaverse?

Dan: I’m good with social media right now… maybe I need to learn about the metaverse!

24-Dimitris: Do you believe that music genres or styles are still relevant today? What is your opinion about hybrids and artists attempting to mix influences from various genres in their tracks?

Dan: What ever makes you happy! Not my place to criticize someone else’s tastes in music!

25-Dimitris: Finally tell us if you are able to make a leaving out of your music business (DJ/producer/label owner/teaching or mastering tracks) and if not what other jobs are you doing in order to make a decent leaving?

Dan: Not a chance! Maybe one day!
